Government strengthens records management practices
The provincial government is modernizing the way it manages paper and electronic records.
Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Doug Currie today tabled in the legislature a three-year strategy to improve how records are managed in all government departments. The strategy builds on work underway, and responds to recommendations from the Auditor General to ensure that government records are properly retained and securely stored.
“Records management is a priority and a responsibility we take very seriously,” said Minister Currie. “Our three year strategy will create consistent high standards for accountability for records management in all departments of government .”
As part of the strategy, amendments to the Archives and Records Act will be introduced in the spring 2017 session of the legislature that will make compliance in print and electronic records management mandatory. The strategy includes training, a new electronic records management program and a second records centre to add needed capacity for the secure storage of records.
To ensure compliance, an annual report will be tabled in the legislature.
