Pharmacists are invaluable members of our health care team.
Every day they play a key role … at the front line of health care …. in pharmacies throughout the Island.
Pharmacists provide expert advice to physicians on the best medication for their patients.
They take the time to do client medication reviews …. and help Islanders understand their prescriptions.
And with the assistance of pharmacy assistants and technicians, they ensure Islanders get their medications as safely and efficiently as possible.
Mister Speaker, pharmacy staff are very highly trained.
We continue to tap and transfer their knowledge and skills
as extraordinary new drugs become available
and as they manage more and more specialized information.
By expanding the role of pharmacists and other professionals, such as nurse practitioners and paramedics ….. they are now authorized to provide more services, for which they are fully trained.
Mister Speaker, this spring, we will introduce An Act to Amend the Pharmacy Act to clarify and expand the roles and responsibilities of pharmacy assistants, pharmacy technicians and pharmacists in dispensaries.
This will ensure that each of their roles is clearly defined and updated in the legislation.
And it will allow these highly trained professionals to fully use their valuable skills.
Mister Speaker, people are the most important element in high quality health care.
So that Islanders have access to the care they need, where and when they need it.
Thank you Mister Speaker.
