Mister Speaker, helping Islanders take steps to a healthier life …… and building a culture of wellness ….. are at the core of our new wellness strategy.
It focuses on five priorities:
• mental wellness
• physical activity
• tobacco-free living
• healthy eating
• and, responsible alcohol consumption.
Government has invested heavily in many wellness initiatives.
They range from school-based programs…. to boardwalks and bike lanes…. to positive parenting programs…. to go!PEI….. smoking cessation …. and seniors activity programs.
Mister Speaker, everyone has a role to play in building a culture of wellness.
NGOs, municipalities and not-for-profit groups have had great success helping Islanders make wellness part of their daily lives.
To support their efforts, government has launched a $100,000 wellness grant program for community-based initiatives.
Applications for grants of up to $5,000 are now open to Home and School Associations…. municipalities…. post-secondary education institutions…. and not-for-profit groups.
Application forms are available on our website …. and will be accepted until June 19th.
Projects will be adjudicated by representatives from health, sport and recreation, mental health and addictions, and school health.
We are very pleased with the response to date.
So far we have received over 80 grant applications.
They are from established community organizations…. as well as informal groups from across the province.
The projects are targeted to all ages.
They address a wide range of abilities…. and respond to the five priority areas.
Mister Speaker, we are confident that the wellness grants will spark great ideas….
…. capitalize on the great work underway in Island communities…. … and help more people take steps to better health. Thank you.
