In the 2012 Speech from the Throne, our government outlined our priorities in health care, which are to improve access to:
- emergency services
- general practitioners
- mental health and addiction services
- elective surgeries
- long term care
Since 2007, this government has put the needs of our Island seniors – the people who helped build this province — at the forefront.
We lifted the moratorium on long term care beds.
We invested $63 million in a manor replacement program.
And we doubled our investment in home care.
In 2011, we announced the province would fund an additional 40 long term care beds – bringing the provincial complement up to 1,051 beds, an increase of 76 beds.
Government continues to work with Health PEI to create better access to long term care.
In February, Health PEI issued a RFP for an additional 55 long term care beds for the private sector over the next two years.
As a result, the total number of long term care beds in our province will be 1,129 by 2015.
That is 135 new long term care beds added to our system since 2007.
Madam Speaker, this is a huge investment in the future of Island health care, and later today I will be announcing the detail on the allocation of these 55 new beds. Thank you.
