I rise in the house today to provide the members of this legislative assembly and Islanders an update on physician recruitment.
2013 has been a busy year for our Recruitment and Retention Secretariat with the recruitment of 19 new physicians to our province.
These physicians include specialists in neurology, psychiatry, oncology, general surgery, and pediatrics as well as five new family physicians.
Not only is our Recruitment and Retention team looking to fill vacancies that exist within our province, but planning ahead for future vacancies that will come through retirement.
Prince Edward Island offers physicians a competitive salary as well as return-in-service grants, rural recruitment incentives, and moving allowances.
The Province is also continuing to invest in our Family Medical Residency Program which began in 2009 and has seen great success.
This year, four of our graduating residents have decided to stay and practice in Prince Edward Island taking over the patient load of physicians currently working in the province wishing to retire or phase out their family practice.
We have also created the Family Medicine Sponsorship Program which focuses on bringing new family physicians to the area of greatest need. We will welcome our first physician through this program in 2016.
The Government of Prince Edward Island wishes to welcome all our new physicians to the medical staff of the province and we wish them the best in their medical careers here on Prince Edward Island!
