I rose in the house today to recognize the great work of the staff of the QEH Same Day Treatment Unit.
The Same Day Treatment Unit was established in July 2011 to enable the QEH to realign the ambulatory care workload and patient volumes from various areas within the QEH including the Emergency Department, PEI Cancer Treatment Centre and In-Patient Services.
The unit was added to reduce wait times and the frequent rescheduling of appointments that patients experienced when services were delivered in the Emergency Department.
STU services include dressing changes, anticoagulation therapy and therapeutic phlebtomy. The majority of patients are receiving blood transfusions or other blood product and IV therapies.
The service expanded from five to seven days a week in early December and is expected to expand from eight hours to twelve hours Monday to Friday by the time the unit moves to the new Ambulatory Care Centre this spring.
All services at the Same Day Treatment Unit are by appointment and patients requiring STU services must be referred by a physician.
To date, there have been more than 1,600 (sixteen hundred) total patient visits to the STU with an average of more than 400 per month since weekend coverage began in December.
The service is providing quality and efficient services to all Islanders using the unit and relieves pressure in the emergency department – reducing the demand in the emergency department by an average of 280 visits a month.
Not only has the STU relieved demand in the emergency department but it is providing greater health and safety benefits to its patients as they are receiving timely, and in some cases life-sustaining, health care services in the most appropriate setting, by the most appropriate health care providers at the most appropriate times.
The Department of Health and Wellness is working collaboratively with Health PEI and our hospitals to improve and expand services for Islanders. The Same Day Treatment Unit is a proof point of our government’s commitment to provide equitable, high-quality services for all Islanders.
