Pat Mella and Harvey MacEwen will join Education, Early Learning and Culture Deputy Minister Susan Willis as members of the board of directors of the Public Schools Branch.
Under the new Education Act, the board of directors of the Public Schools Branch is accountable to the minister and responsible for providing advice and direction on operational policies of the 56 English public schools. This includes policies related to bussing, facility maintenance, student attendance, and the hiring of teachers and school staff.
Pat Mella is a former teacher, former member of the Legislative Assembly and former finance minister. Harvey MacEwen is a former director of the Western School Board with over 30 years’ experience in school system operations. Deputy Minister Susan Willis will be chairperson.
The board of directors of the Public Schools Branch will hold public meetings to allow input into operational policies affecting English public schools. The first meeting will be held in mid-September.
“Public education in Prince Edward Island benefits from experienced voices and I welcome the appointment of Pat Mella and Harvey MacEwen to this board,” said Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Doug Currie. “I know they will provide valuable insight into operation of our English public schools.”
The Public Schools Branch will post information on upcoming public meeting dates and locations on their website at http://www.gov.pe.ca/edu/psb/
